The European Union has agreed further sanctions against Iran as a result of the countries continued nuclear programme.

The new sanctions measures are expected to result in an immediate ban on all new contracts within the EU for the export of Iranian oil; however existing contracts are likely to be permitted until 1 July 2012.

It is thought that the new sanctions measures will also target Iranian banks.

Full details of the intended sanctions programme are expected to be available in the near future.
