Dominican Republic Signing up to the IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap
The IMO 2020 sulphur cap applies to nations that have ratified MARPOL Annex VI. At the end of 2019, 96 States had ratified, leaving a notable number of countries who haven’t.
One such country is the Dominican Republic. Local correspondents, E&M International Consulting, have reported that they are assisting the country’s maritime authorities to introduce equivalent sulphur requirements to that of IMO 2020.
A decree will be issued that will introduce the pertinent aspects of the IMO fuel sulphur regulations and will serve as a bridge while they complete the process of ratifying MARPOL Annex VI.
Correspondents also advise that there are currently no restrictions on the discharge of open-loop scrubber washwater in the Dominican Republic.
