How can we create a structure in which safety simply becomes “the way we do things around here”?
Most modern day shipping companies have complied with the requirements of the ISM code with a systems-based approach to safety. This did have a positive impact on how shipping companies approached safety, but in many cases did not focus on the human behaviour element.
The effects of a systems-based approach have plateaued; therefore the human element is now under focus as an area where the safety performance of companies can be improved. Safety management needs to be upgraded to version 2.0.

North’s safety management initiative, Safety Management 2.0 was first introduced in 2019, and aims to identify current problems in your safety management system and the potential solutions. Safety management systems that are based on complex procedures and protocols often forget the human element. North’s Safety Management 2.0 places the human at the very centre of ensuring a consistent and enduring safety management approach.
