The United States Coastguard (USCG) has issued a safety alert related to the use of biodegradable cleaners in engine room spaces.
Marine safety alert 08-18 highlights the USCG’s concerns over the use of biodegradable cleaners in engine room, particularly when transferring the mixture of cleaners and oily wastes into slop or bilge tanks. The USCG reports that when the mixture is stored in nearly full slop or bilge tanks it can result in potentially dangerous levels of Hydrogen Sulphide gas.
