North Issues Guidance to Seafarers on Complying with the IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap
North has issued quick and simple guidance for seafarers on complying with the IMO global sulphur cap that takes effect on 1 January 2020.
Our new series – 2020 Shorts – gets back to basics to give seafarers the key information they need to safely comply with the sulphur cap regulations.
With only weeks to go, two significant uncertainties remain – what will the new fuels look like and how will the regulation be enforced around the world?
Our first two quick reference guides tackle these.
Know Your Fuel
Some vessels may switch to compliant distillates or install exhaust gas cleaning systems. But many may turn to the new generation of marine fuels – VLSFOs (very-low-sulphur fuel oils). Characteristics can vary massively between VLSFO products and they will need storing and handling differently.
In conjunction with Innospec Inc., we provide some simple points to consider for the engineers faced with dealing with these new fuels.
Preparing for Port State
The sulphur cap regulation is set by the IMO, but enforcement is the responsibility of the individual states. How it is enforced may vary as will any penalties imposed for non-compliance.
We look at what to expect from Port State Control (PSC) and we provide a simple checklist of what to consider when preparing for an inspection.
