Nickel Ore Cargo - Loading at Surigao - Philippines

Club correspondents have warned that the current heavy rains in the area of Surigao have resulted in many ships having wet cargo presented for loading.

The situation is a cause for concern:

  • It appears that much of the cargo cannot be loaded in compliance with the IMSBC
  • Surveyors are under pressure not to reject barges.
  • Despite doubts about the cargo – some barges are being loaded but failing can tests, squeeze tests, and showing signs of splatter. This results in loading being stopped.
  • Cargoes that have been independently analysed have higher moisture contents than those declared on the shippers declaration.

Club correspondents are recommending that any ship destined to load nickel ore in this area has independent cargo samples sent for analysis before arrival.
