Enclosed Space Entry - A Reminder
Deaths and serious injuries to both ship and shore personnel involving enclosed spaces are well known and frequently publicised. Recent incidents suggest that, despite this widespread attention and recent legislation, the procedures designed to reduce the risks involved in enclosed spaces are still being ignored.
In one incident two crew members entered a cargo hold, loaded with coal, to carry out weld repairs to a blocked sounding pipe. Both men were seriously injured following an explosion.
In a separate incident, three stevedores entered a cargo hold to assist with discharge. The men entered the wrong cargo hold and collapsed at the first platform of the access ladder. All were safely recovered by the prompt action of the ship’s crew.
