Drug Smuggling – High Risk Routes
Criminals using cargo ships to smuggle narcotics isn’t a new problem. But recent incidents have highlighted particular routes that are being targeted by smugglers.
There has been a notable increase in the finding of cocaine on vessels trading from Colombia to Mexico. One particular route is Barranquilla to Altamira.
In many of these cases, bulk carriers have been targeted. The drugs (packaged cocaine) were buried within the cargo and were only discovered during discharge operations. There have also been reports that a favoured method of secreting drugs onto the vessel is by placing them on loading conveyors. This clearly makes it very difficult for crew to detect.
The Mexican authorities are taking extremely strong action upon the discovery of drugs. Vessels have been detained and crew arrested by police.
Another recent spike in incidents concerns the smuggling of cocaine from Ecuadorian ports. Drugs have been found at discharge in ports in Turkey and Algeria.
Vessels trading in these areas should continue to follow best practice and promptly report any findings of drugs.
