Cyber Fraud – Increasing Sophistication
North is aware of cyber criminals targeting its Members and the Club with emails seemingly originating from P&I correspondents.
In one recent case the cyber criminals emailed a Member claiming to be one of North’s correspondents. The email displayed an understanding of shipping in that:
- It claimed that the correspondent had been advised of a cargo shortage claim against one of the Members vessels.
- It stated that the Member had not defended the claim and therefore a decision had been made against them.
- The email also contained an arrest order.
- It advised the Member to contact their P&I club for assistance.
The email address used in this attack was only one letter different from the real email address of North’s correspondent and originated from their account which had been hacked.
Members should remain vigilant to the continued threat of cyber fraud as the techniques used grow more sophisticated.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Club if you think you may have received a suspicious message from one of our correspondents.
