COVID-19 and Crew Changes

To help shipowners with the challenges of carrying out crew changes, new information has been added to North’s MyGlobeView and the International Group COVID-19 Online Tracker.

Crew changes – a country by country guide

North partnered with geospatial intelligence experts Geollect to provide our Members with a map-based information portal, MyGlobeView. As the spread of COVID-19 took hold, we added information layers on the status of the outbreak and the measures and restrictions adopted by each country.

Such was the popularity of this information, in the spirit of collective endeavour to tackle such a serious global health threat, we teamed up with the other International Group (IG) P&I Clubs and Geollect to launch the IG COVID-19 Online Tracker. Free of charge to all users, it is proving to be an invaluable tool thanks to the contributions from Club correspondents and shipping agencies around the world.

Acting on feedback from shipowner members on their frustrations on being unable to relieve their crews, we have now added a new layer on the map to answer the question “are crew changes allowed?”.

This issue has quickly developed into a key threat to the continuity of global shipping, with the real physical and mental issues being faced by crew trying to get home. The impact on these key workers is laid bare in the recently issued ‘Seafarers Happiness Index’ by the Mission to Seafarers, which found that those at sea “reported feeling physically exhausted, mentally disturbed, homesick and anxious.”

Users of MyGlobeView and the IG Online Tracker can now quickly check the status of countries as to whether crew replacements are allowed and what restrictions are in place.

A further enhancement is the addition of information on whether a country allows seafarers to go ashore for medical treatment.

There have regrettably been instances where the authorities of some countries have refused permission for a crew member who has either been injured or is suffering from a non-COVID-19 illness to be treated ashore.
