Bunker Fuel – Not a Virus

Close physical contact between ship and shore personnel during bunkering on internationally-trading vessels means there is a risk of spreading the Coronavirus.

To try and mitigate this risk, the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has offered some practical advice.

These include:

  • Barge staff, receiving vessel crew, surveyors and agents should minimise touching contaminated surfaces. Remember, the virus may persist on paper, laminated plastic and polished surfaces more than bunker hoses, flanges and valve wheels, where gloves are frequently worn.
  • Each port is likely to have in place their own advice and guidance, and this should be checked in advance.
  • Be aware of local regulations and note that severe penalties may be imposed for non-compliance.
  • Ensure everyone is familiar with their respective companies’ policy and guidelines on preventing the spread of the virus.
  • Check that bunker survey companies and other third parties are acting properly to prevent spread. This may include use of masks or hand sanitiser.
  • Try to carry out any interactions in the open air and maintain distance between each other. Avoid entering the accommodation where possible
