2021 World Maritime Day Theme: Seafarers – At the Core Of Shipping’s Future

“Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future” is the 2021 World Maritime Day theme. The theme reflects a clear need to raise awareness of seafarers’ vital role in world trade and increase their visibility.

Our Chief Executive, Paul Jennings, recently highlighted that It is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most unexpected events in recent times, creating immense commercial challenges for shipping businesses, disrupting global supply chains, shipping networks and port operations. When reviewing this global impact, the importance of the individual seafarers cannot be forgotten. Despite all the progress being made with crew vaccinations and repatriation arrangements, North continues to call for more countries around the world to recognise seafarers as ‘Key Workers of the Sea’ to ensure that crew do not once again become ‘collateral damage’ in a pandemic that is far from over.

Background: World Maritime Day

World Maritime Day was first held in 1978 to mark the 20th anniversary of the IMO Convention’s entry into force. Celebrations are held throughout the world to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the marine environment, and to emphasise a particular aspect of IMO’s work. World Maritime Day celebrations are usually held during the last week in September. For more information: https://www.imo.org/en/About/Events/Pages/World-Maritime-Theme-2021.aspx
