Loss Prevention FAQ's
What is Targeted Loss Prevention?
Our Targeted Loss Prevention provides support to our Members in an increasingly regulated and safety-conscious environment. We believe that a safer ship is an efficient ship and through our provision of expert-led information, publications, training and direct support, our Members can implement their own loss prevention and safety programmes with the ultimate goal of reducing claims.
What are North’s Loss Prevention Initiatives?
Our Loss Prevention team focuses on safety culture, which can be broken down into the following categories: the right crew, safety management, expert training and seminars and easily accessible information from our industry-leading news, articles and publications. To ensure the highest level of ship standards, our team regularly consults with a Loss Prevention working group and a condition survey programme to provide both general guidance and tailored support. Our aim is to equip you with the right tools to help shape your internal programmes.
Who delivers North’s loss prevention support?
Our experienced and dedicated team of 13, including seven master mariners and two marine engineers based across the UK and Singapore, have over 250 years of combined maritime and seagoing experience in all major sectors. This experience and expertise allow us to put ourselves in your shoes to guide you through the support you need. Over 2,500 real life enquiries are answered every year by our Loss Prevention Team. We deal with matters of cargo information and trading area risks, whilst providing a mariner’s expert perspective.
What training courses do the Loss Prevention Team offer?
At North, we offer two forms of training and education. The Residential Training Course and Bite-Size training packages. The Residential Training Course offers specialist support in all aspects of Protecting and Indemnity (P&I) insurance and is available in both the UK and Singapore. When undergoing this course, you will gain a range of knowledge from a series of expert-led presentations and discussions, as well as focused workshops, debates and role-play exercises. Our Bite-Size training packages provide you with the background, instructions and content to support senior officers and superintendents delivering training to ship’s officers and crew.

Our LPWG support a collaborative approach to addressing industry issues and the development of prevention tools and initiatives.
Participants are appointed from our membership with a view to having input from a cross-section of vessel types and operations. Two working groups meet twice a year in Europe and Asia.
